The Basilica of San Vitale
One of the most important churches during the sixth-century (Byzantine Era). The church was build outside of Constantinople in Ravenna, Italy. When Italy was under Ostrogothic rule the church was commissioned by Ecclesius, a local bishop. The church was completed when Justinian conquest Ravenna and it was dedicated to Saint Vitalis, early christian martyr. This church contains mosaics of Emperor Justinian and Empress Theodora. Most mosaics are offerings to Christ from rulers. Bishop Ecclesius also offers a model of the church to Christ in the apse.
